Just few points played better, 3 or 4, and now Laurynas Grigelis would be in the 2011 Us Open main draw, fourth Grand Slam tournament of the season. Lithunian star of Future Talent team gave all he had, fought till the last game, beat two tough opponents like Adam Kellner and Bastian Knittel (both better ranked than him). Then, in the decisive match for playing in the main draw, alongside Djokovic, Nadal and Co., Laurynas lost to Frenchman Augustin Gensse 7-6 7-5, wasting a lead of 5-4 (and serve) in the first set.
It’s a missed opportunity, and it’s a pity, but qualifying tournament of the U.S. Open have once again confirmed the great potential of the young gun grew up in Brusaporto, who showed an extraordinary (and in some ways unexpected) shape.
From victory at the Aptos Challenger, passing the qualifying tournament at the Atp in Los Angeles, Grigelis put himself to the attention of fans and insiders, as one of the newcomers to watch in the near future. Meanwhile, the U.S. Open gave him lots of experience and 16 ATP points, which in the next world rankings will bring him around number 230.
Beyond the defeat close to the finish line, it was a great pride, for Future Talent, to bring a player grew up in Brusaporto in a Grand Slam event. It's the first time it happens in almost one hundred years of tennis history in the province of Bergamo.
Laurynas, with coach Beppe Menga and Andrea Stoppini, will come back to Europe on Tuesday, 30th of August. He will play 3 Challenger tournaments: St Remy de Provence (France), Istanbul and Izmir (Turkey).
